I hope you’re doing well! We met briefly at the Stanford Alumni book discussion in Chicago earlier this year. I finished reading your book and absolutely loved it! Wow, what an awesome narrative of Hawaii’s history. There were so many details beautifully woven into the telling/retelling of the history of the Islands. I learned an immense about Hawaii, its native culture, people and about the politics of the past, especially of American imperialism/colonialism. I felt great empathy for the Queen and the way in which she lost her kingdom. Thank you for sharing this history.

Thank you for your nice note.. i truly appreciate it! I’m hoping to write a blog item about movies that involve Hawaiian history — what did you think of the Ka’iulani film? There’s also a very good PBS American Experience documentary on the queen that you might want to watch next. By the way, I like your motto of “Stay Calm and Read Books.” Good advice for all of us!

I really enjoyed your book I received it from goodreads first reads program.When I saw this post my face lit up because I have had Hawaii’s lost kingdom on my brain since reading your book weeks ago.You have made me crave more about the women and men you wrote about.In fact I was just getting ready to watch the movie titled Princess Ka’iulani at 3am lol.So this post was perfect timing for a new fan of yours.Thank you for the wonderful side story.

Well, I am not a fan of fiction materials. I just read them out of curiosity sometimes. Yeah, some of them are great but not to the extent that I count myself as part of it. I think it’s seriously awesome how “human” Kaui seems. Seeing her in interviews and everything, she just appears to be so grateful for such an incredible opportunity and almost startled by her own accomplishments! I saw this interview the other day and thought it was adorable that she couldn’t even recall the designer she was wearing at the Writer’s Guild Awards. America could learn a lot more from a woman like this as opposed to the majority of people we see on Reality TV!
